Updating Arch Linux
2024-10-09
I run Arch Linux (by the way) on my desktop, laptop, and a couple of personal servers. As a rolling release distro, Arch does not have the same guarantee of package capability that a traditional distro like Ubuntu offers (that said, I always end up installing many apps from PPAs and other out-of-band means on Ubuntu, so I'm not sure how much that guarantee means). I've had very few problems updating in the 10 years or so I've run Arch as a daily driver, but there's always the possibility of something going horribly wrong. I thought it might be worth presenting the solution I've developed in case it might be interesting or helpful to others.

DIY Indoor Surveilance Cameras with HomeAssistant
2024-09-01
As a new homeowner getting ready to take my first big trip away from the house later this month, I'd naturally like to keep tabs on things while I'm away. I already have numerous environmental sensors scattered around, and I can connect to HomeAssistant remotely over Tailscale, but cameras would give me the extra peace of mind. Rather than buy an off-the-shelf IP camera (that would be too easy), I decided to put something together myself.

Project Landship
2024-07-10
I wrote the following a few months ago, when the idea of building this website was just starting to bubble up in my brain. A fair amount has happened since then, including a successful garden (good) and several unexpected repairs (not so good).
My partner and I recently bought a house on 0.76 acres, about a third of which is protected wetlands. The house and property will need a fair amount of work to make it more resilient to the increasingly extreme weather patterns that climate change is causing, and still more to achieve our solarpunk dreams. Like most good things this will be a process of gradual change over many years.

Camping at Emerald Lake
2024-07-07
I went camping this weekend with some friends at Emerald Lake State Park in Vermont, and figured this would be a good opportunity to figure out how I want to handle pictures on this blog.

First Steps Hosting
2024-07-04
Step 1 is to actually get this site up on https://xylemphloem.xyz, rather than just sitting here on
localhost
. I'm using a static site generator called Zola, which, as it turns out, is a little annoying to get going on Ubuntu. -
Website TODO
2024-07-04
I expect this will be somewhat of a living document as I check items off and get more ideas. I may also add notes on how I do things, if they're not significant or interesting enough to deserve their own post.
